The fun, the love, and the clay! Reeces Clay Pieces is where it’s at!

Mckinlei is the owner of Reeces Clay Pieces. This is a small jewelry owned business based out of Utah, but ships all over the US! I met Mckinlei through social media and when I came across her profile, her clay pieces were mesmerizing. I’m a sucker for good earrings!

This is her story:

Hi Mckinlei! I’m absolutely obsessed with your handmade clay jewelry. Could you tell me your story?

I started Reece’s Clay Pieces because I was suffering with postpartum depression after my third baby was born. I needed something to help me use my brain in a different way. I needed something that helped me create. I would love for my business to become a full time job for me but at this point in my motherhood journey it is more of a side hustle for me. I hope once my kids are in school full time I will be able to put more into my business!

What has been the most fulfilling part of this journey for you?

The most fulfilling part has been all of the connections I have made through my business. It’s been amazing to see strangers supporting me and all the friends I have made through instagram and also in person markets. Also, seeing that I can do hard things has been so empowering for me.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to face since starting this business?

The biggest challenge I have had is running a business without a business degree. There is so much behind running a business that I had no idea about. It’s hard to wear so many hats and be one person.

What has been your favorite design to make and why?

My favorite things to design is our floral pieces. I’ve always loved flowers in general and the floral pieces of other clay artists are what drew me to clay jewelry making. Florals can be very hard and so it’s kind of fun to stretch my skills and learn new techniques.

Where can we buy your jewelry?

I have an Etsy shop and that is where my pieces can be bought. I am looking to create my own website in the future though.

Do you have any advice for other people interested in making clay jewelry?

Advice to others would be just start. Don’t wait because you are afraid that you aren’t good enough. Practicing is what makes you better. I waited about 6 months to start and wish I would have started earlier.

With everything you know now, is there anything you’d tell a beginner business owner?

For the beginner business owners, I would say ask other business owners that are a few steps ahead of you for advice. Make those connections early on in your business so you have someone to look to when you need help. Also have a very strong ‘why’ behind your business. Times get tough and you question yourself. But you will always have your why to check yourself during those times.

Thank you so much Mckinlei for sharing this! I also just have to say that I LOVE your ‘Mom and Me’ earrings!! Just so darn cute!

I hope all starting out business owners can learn from her! If you’d like to follow her on instagram here it is: https://www.instagram.com/reeces_clay_pieces/
